Golf in Society: Enriching Lives and Building Community in North East England

Golf in Society in the North East is providing a supportive community for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, Dementia, and people facing physical and mental health concerns.

Golf has long been a popular sport, captivating enthusiasts with its competitive nature, elegant swings, and picturesque landscapes. However, in recent years, golf has transcended mere recreation to become a catalyst for positive change in society. One such driving force behind this transformation is Anthony Etchells, who has been utilising golf as a means of empowerment for various communities in the North East region of England.

Empowering the Visually Impaired

Anthony Etchells partnered with Vision Northumberland, a charitable organisation focused on supporting individuals with visual impairments, to introduce golf as a new avenue of opportunity and enjoyment. At Burgham Park Golf Club, Anthony has been teaching people with visual impairments the game of golf, seizing the chance to enhance their physical well-being and provide an inclusive environment for social interaction.

Supporting People with Parkinson’s

Thanks to funding from Parkinson’s UK, Anthony has been instrumental in leading free golf sessions for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. By collaborating with esteemed venues such as Matfen Hall, Tynemouth Golf Club, Wearside Golf Club, Morpeth Golf Club, and Cocken Lodge, Anthony is bringing the joy and benefits of golf to those affected by Parkinson’s in the North East.

These sessions not only improve physical dexterity but also serve as a supportive community space where individuals can connect, share experiences, and find solace in the company of like-minded people facing similar challenges.

Enabling Inclusion and Well-being

Further drawing on his vast experience, Anthony continues to utilise funding from Sport England to assist individuals living in County Durham who face disabilities, chronic illness, and mental health concerns.

By harnessing the inherent therapeutic qualities of golf, Anthony empowers these individuals, encouraging them to focus on their abilities rather than their limitations. The game acts as a respite from daily challenges, offering a space for self-improvement, camaraderie, and emotional well-being.

Through these efforts, Anthony fosters a sense of belonging and contributes to the overall health and quality of life of the community.
