Transformative Power Unveiled: Golf Sessions for Older Adults
Introduction: A Quest for Transformation
Embarking on a journey of discovery, Golf in Society partnered with Sport for Confidence and the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam
University to pioneer a groundbreaking research program.
Fuelled by a collective vision to illuminate the transformative power of tailored golf sessions for older adults facing cognitive and physical challenges, our mission was to evaluate the efficacy of our interventions and uncover the profound impact they have on participants and caregivers alike.
With the support of Innovate UK, as part of the government-funded Healthy Ageing Challenge initiative, we set out to revolutionise perceptions of golf and its potential as a vehicle for holistic health and well-being.

Research Program Overview: Illuminating the Path
Our research program was designed to explore the multifaceted effects of our tailored golf sessions.
Over the course of 12 weeks, participants engaged in structured sessions at Hillsborough Golf Club in Sheffield, where they received personalised attention from our team of experts.
Physiological and biomechanical measurements were taken at the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre to gauge the physical impact of the program, while qualitative data was collected from caregivers to gain insight into their experiences.
Through a mixed-methods approach, we sought to unravel the complexities of our interventions and uncover the true essence of their impact.
Voices of Resilience: Participant Testimonies
Through the words of our participants, we witnessed the profound transformation our sessions facilitated.
“It’s nice to know that when he is here, he is doing something fun for him,” shared one caregiver.
“It’s preserving his mental state,” echoed another.
Participants emphasised the social connections and sense of independence gained from our sessions, reaffirming the power of community and camaraderie.

A Source of Support and Respite: Caregiver Reflections
Caregivers shared heartfelt reflections on the impact of our program on their lives.
“It’s helping me because if he’s happier, I’m happier,” expressed one caregiver.
Another noted, “It’s treating me as well… it’s a break for me, a chance to meet other
people, and I like joining in for me too.”
Our sessions provided not only respite but also a sense of community and support, enriching the lives of caregivers.
Challenges Faced: Overcoming Recruitment and Delivery Hurdles
While celebrating our successes, we also acknowledge the challenges we faced during the project.
Recruitment hurdles and changing perceptions, particularly around the word “golf,” presented obstacles, impacting participant numbers.
However, through perseverance and dedicated efforts, we navigated these
challenges, continuously striving to reach and support those in need.
Looking Forward: A Bright Horizon Ahead
As we reflect on the positive outcomes from the research project, we are now determined to get our innovative services adopted and scaled throughout the UK.
With every swing, we are rewriting the narrative of aging, one moment of joy and connection at a time.
Together, with our partners and supporters, we will continue to redefine what is possible and inspire generations to come.
The research project has not only evidenced the therapeutic power of our holistic golf and health programmes but has also paved the way for future initiatives aimed at enhancing the health and happiness of older adults and their caregivers.
